Before treatment
Mr P came to us with bilateral primary lymphoedema of the legs which had worsened following surgery. We were asked to treat his right leg which was more severely affected (though we also treated his left leg as well when there was time).
After treatment
The pictures below show the difference after An Arm & a Leg’s 3 week in-patient decongestive lymphatic therapy programme, consisting of twice daily manual lymph drainage, multilayer lymphoedema bandaging, meticulous skincare, physiotherapy and exercises in the water.
Results
Mr P lost over 8 litres of fluid from his right lower leg and more than 2 litres from his left. He was considerably more mobile, knee pain was reduced and his mood was much improved.
This is an exceptional result which needs to be maintained with regular manual lymph drainage and well fitting compression hosiery, replaced every 4-6 months.
Mr P has learned to bandage his lower leg to assist in his maintenance. This should ideally be supplemented from time to time by a few days of bandaging by a qualified lymphoedema therapist following his manual lymph drainage.
For the best long-term rognosis, early treatment is advisable and adequate local maintenance essential.
