Before treatment
Mrs M came to us for treatment of the severe secondary lymphoedema in her right leg. Her mobility was very impaired and she could only descend the stairs backwards. She suffered constantly from back pain.



After treatment
The pictures below show the difference after An Arm & a Leg’s 3 week in-patient decongestive lymphatic therapy programme, consisting of twice daily manual lymph drainage,multilayer lymphoedema bandaging, meticulous skincare, physiotherapy and exercises in the water.



Results
Mrs M lost 13 litres of fluid and 2 stone in weight from her affected leg during treatment. She was then able to come downstairs normally again, her back pain was reduced and her general mobility substantially increased.

Mrs M’s case, as illustrated here, is an extreme one, but it serves to illustrate the efficacy of decongestive lymphatic therapy with twice daily treatments. For the best long-term prognosis, early treatment is advisable and adequate local maintenance essential. This should consist of regular manual lymph drainage, compression hosiery (properly fitted and replaced every 4-6 months) and lymphoedema bandaging from time to time.
